Nil Diya Pokuna Expedition

When adventure become an addiction, then you look forward to enjoy the death. Even it feels hard to reach, you would pray for danger and run straight to the fire. And being the Uva Wellassa Undergraduates, we found the perfect partners, Uva Trip Adviser - UTA for our latest journey...

After an invitation by Rtr. Damith De Silva - Treasure 16/17 of Rotaract Club of Badulla, I was eagerly waiting for the adventure scheduled to be on the next day 21st. Leaving University premises to Badulla with a group of 5 Including Damith, Genda, Pumaa, Picaso & Kita (Rtr. Hashan Hirosh) we took th second bus from Badulla to Bandarawela. Getting down from Kumbalwela Junction, we forwarded or journey to Karanndagolla bus halt taking a bus through Wellawaya route.

The stop was Karanndagolla School and the next journey was on foot through the road next to the main road. Seeing the 5th Kilometer-post, Damith contacted our guide team "UTA _ Uva Trip Adviser" and we were adviced to follow the road till the 3rd Km-post.

Seeing the Forest Department's board at 3rd Km-post, we waited for the UTA Team.

Led by Hiranya Layan & team, we were headed to the caves through the jungle and at the starting point, we changed the dresses to the searchable wearable and everyone were equipped with a torch. That was where everyone had their breakfast. (And yeah, could be the last if Hiranya and team wasn't there - oopz!)

The journey by all that means, should not be tried by individuals and without a guide and required equipment. There were some drops of 90 degrees where the devil waits under 20 to 70 feet which could not have been passed if we didn't have the proper equipment.

The cave was believed to be used by Ravana to hide Seetha as per the folk tales says and there were also recent documentaries by the Sri Lankan Television channel, ITN in a program called "Wenasa". Also there had been a recent incident of a 21 year old girl came saying that she is up to wake the Ravana up which finally ended up with huge social and media impact and the villagers were covering up the entry to the caves since then.

And for the record at the point where we found "Nil Diya Pokuna" we wondered why the torches blinked and as Hiranya said, the previous times also they have experienced the same.

Ending the journey our team was very well done with the so called EXPEDITION and thanks to UTA, we made new friends like Azman Borham & Asela (Malli-ka) and other UTA fellows.

Again, thanks UTA - Uva Trip Adviser team for giving us this great opportunity filled with adventure, real friend ship and team spirit.

- Dhanusha Dissanayake - On behalf of Uva Wellassa University
